EMDR is one of the newest approved evidence based treatment options for behavioral health. It involves the use of hand held devices that emit lights referred to as paddles amongst other names and are not a threat to your health when being used. The paddles are used only a visual manner with verbal cues. This allows the brain to reprocess past trauma with the overall goal being "trigger extinction" which means events or emotions that would have triggered you in the past, do not any longer.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy or CBT focus on the here and now. It does not focus on past events or feelings. Instead it focuses on present behaviors, the consequences surrounding negative unhealthy thought patterns, and how to change them. Positive change occurs by identifying new ways of thinking that do not involve constant negative assumptions. Some of the techniques can be relaxation techniques, exposure techniques, reward based, or focused on replacing older thoughts with new more healthy ones.
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT is one of the modern approaches to treating mental illness. This therapy approach focuses on helping people manage intense feelings and emotions by building the 4 core skills of DBT - Mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and effective interpersonal relationships. DBT helps people manage emotions, better define personality traits, and both visualize and make a "life worth living".
